Bathtub Ducks

One goal that we have had for a couple of years now was to have some ducks. Into research mode I went. For those of you who don’t already know it, I am the head of the research department here on Off-Kilter Acres. You will find that I bestow upon myself many random titles. Makes me feel all important and whatnot.

Anyways, if you ask Pa, he will tell you the main purpose of us getting ducks is to use the poo water on our orchard trees. If you ask me, well shucks, it is OF COURSE because they are just too darn cute swimming around in their little pool.

Priority number one was to obtain an old bathtub. Thanks to a friend doing some remodeling, Pa hit the jackpot and we got this beauty! Now don’t you go judging my tub, I know it’s not all sparkling clean, but the duckies will be pooing it up anyhow. It will give them a nice little swimming hole. We can drain the water out as needed and refill with clean water from the tap.

Now that the hardest object was obtained, next came keeping them little buggers safe. I would have liked a bit older duckies, but it wasn’t in the cards. So, until they grow a bit, and are seaworthy, we are using the handy dandy dog kennel to keep them in.

See all them zip ties? I swear we should own stock in them. We couldn’t survive on the farm without them.

Despite his loathing for ducks (poor guy was traumatized by one when he was just a wee one), Fish Taco got out there and helped his old Ma secure the kennel. We covered the top with some leftover chicken wire.

And then wrapped the bottom with chicken wire. There, that should keep them in, and the cats, dogs, and mean ole critters out.

We were gifted an antique chick brooder, and the feed and water bins were quickly put to use in the pen. Add in a broken dog crate scavenged from the road ditch to offer shade and shelter, and I think the babies have a nice little set up going on here.

The only thing left to do was to get the babies. This was their first outing in the pen. They bee-lined it for the water troughs. I would say they are happy little duckies, and will be swimming in that big old tub in no time at all.

And with that, I’m off!
